Grand Theft Auto 6 to reportedly have playable female protagonist

Grand Theft Auto VI will have a female protagonist, it has been reported.

Bloomberg‘s Jason Schreier, known for major gaming scoops over the years, has stated that the next entry in the franchise will be led by a Latina woman who is part of a Bonnie and Clyde-inspired group of bank robbers.

While this character won’t be the first playable female protagonist in GTA history, as the top-down early games had them, GTA VI will be the first time that a leading female character will have an actual personality.

The new game will apparently be set in a fictionalised version of Miami, with more interior locations than any previous game in the series. More cities are said to follow in post-release updates in order to reduce the need for employee overtime at studio Rockstar.

That’s not all that has changed at the developer. Due to the changing social and political landscape, the writing for the newest GTA reportedly won’t reference minority groups in a negative way, following the removal of inappropriate jokes in the current-gen re-releases of GTA V.

The publication further states that a lot of changes to the company culture mean “morale has never been higher”, following controversy over the workplace environment in 2018.

However, it seems like development on GTA VI is taking longer than expected, partly due to figuring out the tone of the game, citing the difficulty of trying to parody the breadth of today’s world.

Rockstar itself recently said work on GTA VI was ramping up — to the detriment of Red Dead Online — and while some people interviewed by Bloomberg feel like the game will be out within two years, others aren’t so sure.

Grand Theft Auto V was recently re-released on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
